At approximately 6 to 7 hours after departing, the plane tore apart in the air and crashed, leaving 50 survivors, from the middle of the plane, on a Pacific Island. They quickly determined that their transponder had broke, and the flight had been 1,000 miles off course. It was unlikely that a rescue would come.

As they became familiar with one another, it quickly became apparent that these survivors were as LOST personally as they were physically. They were forced to find knowledge and skill they didn't know they posessed in order to survive.

The exploration of the island began, and they discover that this is no ordinary island. In fact, the island holds many secrets including: a howling, tree destroying mystery creature in the jungle; polar bears; whispering voices in the jungle; a crazy, stranded French Woman from a science expedition 15 years ago; a mysterious group refered to as "The Others"; The Black Rock; and a "hatch" in the ground, locked from the inside.

And although the survivors themselves haven't yet realized it, we have seen through flashback scenes, that many of these survivors have interesting and mysterious connections to one another.

As the season came to a close, Jack, Locke, and Kate were attempting to gain access into the hatch using dynamite they found on The Black Rock, in order to provide a hiding place for the castaways from "The Others." Their fears based solely on the warning from the French Lady that she heard the whispering voices say they were going to take the boy. Meanwhile, Jin, Sawyer, Michael, and Walt were on their raft and getting excited at the prospect of being rescued when they detected a blip on the sonar. It turned out to be a small boat with 4 of The Others onboard. They came to take the boy! As they drove their boat away, with Walt screaming for his father, they blew up the boat. Sawyer appeared to be shot, Jin dove in after him, and Michael yelled helplessly for is son . . .
